In This IssueNEWQUAY, NEW PLATFORMA remarkable view of Newquay station close to midnight on August 28, as Type 3 No. 37610 has just arrived with the eight-weekly 3Q53 ultrasonic test train trip from Penzance to Exeter via Looe and Newquay. Work is underway here to reinstate a second platform as part of the £57 million Mid Cornwall Metro scheme, which will allow an hourly coast-to-coast service to Falmouth via Par, St Austell and Truro. The project also includes a new passing loop on the Newquay branch at Tregoss Moor which, in addition to the existing one at Goonbarrow, will mean that local trains can run concurrently with long-distance Intercity services during the summer months, instead of being replaced by them as is the present case. In This IssueHigh-speed Midlands to Manchester link planA PLAN to reuse the alignment of HS2’s abandoned Phase 2a railway north of Birmingham has been published by the elected mayors of the West Midlands and Greater Manchester. Dubbed the Midlands-North West Rail Link (MNWRL), the route will use land already purchased to provide a new line covering 50 miles between Litchfield and High Legh, where it would join the planned Northern Powerhouse Rail line that will connect Manchester and Warrington via Manchester Airport. MNWRL consists of two segments: a‘Cheshire Connector’north of Crewe and a‘Staffordshire Connector’from south of Crewe to the HS2 at Fradley, near Lichfield. In This IssuePORTISHEAD AWAITSHEADLINE NEWS A decision is expected this autumn on whether the planned reopening to passengers of the line from Bristol to Portishead can go ahead. The line closed in 1964, but was partially reopened for freight from Royal Portbury Dock at the end of 2001. North Somerset Council acquired the remaining trackbed from Pill to Portishead in 2008, with various schemes proposed since then to attract the necessary funding. If a positive decision is given this year, the line could be reopen by 2028. Meanwhile, some of the old trackwork in the Quay’s Avenue area of Portishead was removed on August 12 and donated to the Avon Valley Railway for reuse – including several lengths of 1944 GWR bull-head rail.…1 min
In This IssueWest Coast buys Riviera Trains’ Mk.2 fleetCARNFORTH-BASED West Coast Railway (WCR) has agreed to buy the entire fleet of Mk.2 carriages currently operated by Riviera Trains. Riviera operates a fleet of around 60 Mk.2s, which are fitted with Central Door Locking (CDL) and run in BR Blue/Grey livery. The stock is often used by tour operators such as UK Railtours and Pathfinder Railtours. Riviera Trains owner Barry Cordell, who is in his late-80s, has decided it is time to step down from the operation of a substantial mainline fleet after 30 years in the charter train business. Mr Cordell also owns Pathfinder Railtours, and he plans to focus his time on that business, which means that Riviera will be formally wound down and dissolved. In This IssueGWR‘TURBO’ UPGRADE COMPLETEHEADLINE NEWS Gemini Rail Services at Wolverton Works has completed a three-year programme to refurbish Great Western Railway’s Class 165/166‘Turbo’DMUs. No. 166220 was the final unit released on September 10, completing the fleet of 16 three-car and 20 two-car Class 165s, plus 21 three-car Class 166s. The units are leased from Angel Trains, and £10 million has been spent on the interior makeovers. Improvements include new flooring, replacement and repairs to seating, and painting of all surfaces. All now carry GWR green livery. The trains were built in the early 1990s for Thames Valley services out of Paddington, but many have been displaced by electrification to work out of Bristol and Exeter.…1 min
