I thought kids weren’t supposed to use fluoride toothpaste until age 3 or when they could independently spit it out/not swallow it? It can cause fluorosis otherwise.

You're only supposed to use a smidge of a smear of it, and in super small amounts like that it will cause no harm.

Mine has the giraffe toothbrush by Dr. Brown's and Colgate kids toothpaste with fluoride that I got from public health. I have a bunch of baby toothbrushes that I get every time I go to public health or the dentist so I'll probably just use those once this toothbrush is done.

Would recommend talking to ped or child’s dentist before following the use Fluoride option. I’m in Canada and it’s SUPER not recommended by anyone. My sister is a dental hygienist (they go through basically the same schooling kinda like nurses) and she told me no fluride but bc there is none in our water at all we can do once a week a small amount.

I'm also Canadian and both my dentist and public health recommended fluoridated toothpaste. But I agree, check with your dentist as it sounds like it depends on your risk factors.

They actually hand out fluoridated toothpaste at public health where I live at each public health visit. And our water is fluoridated.

Hi, I'm a dental hygienist and have worked in peds over 15 years. Fluoridated toothpaste is recommended, but all you need is a smear the size of a grain of rice. Don't rinse. That will give a topical effect that will fight bacteria and strengthen the teeth. If there is fluoride in your water the amount is so small it doesn't provide strong topical effects, but drinking daily helps the developing grown up teeth to be stronger.

For everyone who is choosing against fluoride for whatever reason, I highly recommend doing other things to prevent cavities. My biggest recommendation is diet. Avoid sticky processed carbs (crackers cereal, puffs,dried fruit, candy), especially for snacking, and don't sip on anything besides water. Milk is good during meals. Juice-even watered down is bad for teeth, personally I recommend avoiding juice all together

we recently switched to a guru nanda toddler toothbrush! it’s shaped like a giraffe and has super soft bristles and it seems to clean teeth well. we use a tiny drop of crest toothpaste at night
